December Classes on Close Reading
Close reading allows you to discover the meaning of a text through precise attention to its structure and patterns. It is a method of reading that stimulates interest and knowledge in interpreting literature. We introduced the literary art of close reading over the Summer as part of the Literature as a Life Practice class. In these classes we will apply this method to the following pair of literary classics:
Design of the Line I: Shakepeare's The Tempest*
Preparation: re-familiarize yourself with The Tempest, but especially read Prospero's speech in Act 5, Scene 1, beginning at Line 33: "Ye elves of hills, brooks, standing lakes and groves . . . ." (link to pdf download).

Design of the Line II: Frost's "Stopping by Woods"*
Preparation: read Robert Frost's poem, "Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening" (opens new window).
